Catholic Sweeps Juniata in Doubleheader

HUNTINGDON, Pa.  — The Catholic baseball team traveled to play Juniata in conference play, trying to get above .500 against Landmark teams. The offense found its footing in the late innings of game one and two solid starts from Roman Tozzi and Cody Bosak complemented the offense to lead to two wins over the Eagles.

GAME ONE
  • Score: Catholic- 8, Juniata- 1
  • Records: Catholic (10-7), Juniata (5-9)
  • Pitching Decision: W: Roman Tozzi (3-2), L: Connor Krahulec (1-1), S: Jake Kenney (2)
  • The Short Story: After a quiet first six innings from the Catholic offense, the team erupted for eight runs over the final three innings to take game one of the doubleheader, 8-1
Juniata took an early lead in the bottom of the first after a lead-off double from Jacob Despot set the table in the inning. Zach Johnston picked him up with a sacrifice fly into center field to put the Eagles up 1-0.
Tozzi settled in the next several innings and only allowed three hits over his next five innings of work to hold the deficit at 1-0. Tozzi finished with three strikeouts as well and kept the Cardinals in the game throughout his start.

The offense finally clicked for the Cardinals in the top of the seventh inning as they brought six runs to the plate to take control of the game, 6-1. An error started the inning off, then Jack Bateman ripped a single to put runners at the corners with no one out. Jesse Lacefield started the scoring with a sac fly into center field. This started a string of four straight hits for Catholic which was capped off by Mitchel Johnson who smacked a three run homer into right center field to give Catholic a 6-1 lead.

Steve Thomas roped a double into left field to lead off the top of the ninth as the Cardinals looked to add on some insurance in the last inning. Johnson came through once again with a knock into right field to move Thomas up to third and Joe Marini followed up with a fielder's choice to bring Thomas home. Fisher came up with an RBI single later in the inning to bring Marini to the plate and make it an 8-1 lead.

Jake Kenney completed three shutout innings out of the pen to earn himself a save and lock down a game one win for Catholic.

GAME TWO
  • Score: Catholic- 15, Juniata- 7
  • Records: Catholic (11-7), Juniata (5-10)
  • Pitching Decision: W: Cody Bosak (3-0), L: Hunter Thomas (1-3)
  • The Short Story: The Cardinals offense exploded for 15 runs and Bosak turned in another strong start on the mound to lead the Cardinals to an eight run win to sweep the Eagles and advance to 11-7 on the season.
A strong start immediately put the Cardinals in the driver's seat up 4-0. Two errors brought in the first three runs of the inning and Sammy Burman ripped a single into right field to bring in Logan Eilbacher and wrap up the four run first inning.

Lacefield continued the offensive outburst for Catholic in the top of the fifth inning, launching a three-run bomb over the fence to extend the lead out to 7-0.

Despite the Eagles adding on some runs in the late innings, a six-run outburst came in the top of the ninth inning to put the game out of reach. Lacefield continued his hot day, leading off the inning with a double into right center. Dante Pozzi picked up a two-RBI knock with the bases loaded to bring in the first two runs. Eilbacher also drove in two on a single into left field and Jack Elwell wrapped the inning up with a two-RBI triple to bring in Eilbacher and Johnson to make it a 15-7 game.
