SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Catholic football team traveled to Susquehanna on Saturday afternoon, looking to return to .500 on the season with a victory. The Cardinals were able to end the first half and begin the second half with touchdown drives but fell into a 27-0 hole in the first half and the River Hawks were able to coast to a 69-13 win.
After the Cardinals took over with 7:03 left in the second quarter,
Daequan Harvin gave the offense a spark with a 23 yard run on the opening play of the drive. Harvin picked up a third down conversion a few plays later to put Catholic at the Susquehanna 47.
Charles Gulbin came up with a key conversion on third and seven three plays later when he found
Nole Henry for an 11 yard pick up. The Cardinals came up with a clutch play on 3rd and 28 from the River Hawks 38 as Gulbin completed a pass to
Hayden Kennedy for a 32 yard gain to put them in the red zone. Gulbin later found the end zone on a quarterback sneak to cap off the touchdown drive to make the score 27-6.
Susquehanna added a touchdown in the final seconds of the first half to take a 34-6 lead into the halftime break.
The Cardinals got the ball to start the second half and marched on a 11 play, 75 yard touchdown drive to make it a 34-13 ballgame. Gulbin connected with
Cade Chrebet to convert on a third down early in the drive and an eight yard run from Harvin got Catholic into Susquehanna territory. After an offsides on 4th and 1 gave the Cardinals a first down at the River Hawks 23, Gulbin fired a strike over the middle to Chrebet once again in the end zone for Gulbin's lone passing touchdown of the afternoon.
The River Hawks took control of the game back for the remainder of regulation, scoring on each of the final five drives to close out the victory. The loss dropped the Cardinals to 3-5 on the season and 2-2 in Landmark play.
Gulbin completed 20 of his 31 passes for 158 yards with a touchdown and also added another touchdown on the ground to account for both Catholic touchdowns. Harvin had 20 carries on the afternoon for 77 yards to account for the most rushing yards on the team. Henry led the team in receptions and yards with four catches for 37 yards while Kennedy finished with three receptions for 37 yards. Chrebet hauled in his second touchdown reception of the season to account for his first multi-touchdown season of his career.
Evan Chromy led the Catholic defense once again in tackles with eight, including 1.5 tackles for loss.
William Cavallaro made seven tackles, just one shy of his season high and
Maximus Desir added five for the Cardinals.
Next up for the Cardinals is a Landmark matchup against Lycoming on Saturday, November 1 at 12 pm for Senior Day. The Cardinals take on Lycoming on Cardinal Stadium.
