Catholic Pulls Off Thrilling Overtime Victory Over Moravian

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Catholic football team looked to pick up back-to-back victories for the first time this season as they took on Moravian on Cardinal Weekend. Down 20-7 in the third quarter, the Cardinals came up with two key fumble recoveries and turned both turnovers into touchdowns to turn the game on its head and tie things up at 20.

The game went into overtime tied at 20 and the Greyhounds got the ball first after the Cardinals won the coin toss. On 4th down, Moravian tried to run a fake field goal, but Sean Holt was able to hurry the throw to force an incompletion and give Catholic the ball, needing any kind of score to win the game.

Charles Gulbin found Nathan Miscichowski to set up a first down for the Cardinals and two plays later Gulbin connected with Andrew Tabor over the middle of the field and Tabor took it all the way to the end zone for his third touchdown of the game to clinch a 26-20 win to improve the Cardinals to 3-4 on the season.

Lawson Haylock created the first big turnover for Catholic in the third quarter when he came up with a strip sack on Declan McCarthy that was recovered by Evan Chromy at the Moravian 12 yard line to set the Cardinals up with a chance to put a dent into the 13 point deficit. On the very next play, Gulbin found Tabor in the flat and he turned upfield and found the endzone just inside the pylon to cut the deficit down to six.

On the ensuing kickoff, Dorian Thomas muffed Kieran Brenner's kickoff and the Cardinals kickoff team raced down the field to come up with the football. John Brown recovered the fumble at the Moravian 10 yardline to create a first and goal opportunity for the Cardinals to create a chance to tie the game.

The game entered the fourth quarter after the first down play, and on second down Daequan Harvin ran the ball straight up the middle and was able to hit pay dirt to knot the game up at 20. The extra point was blocked and the game remained tied at 20. The Catholic defense came up with five more stops in the fourth quarter to help keep the game tied and force overtime.

The Cardinals other touchdown came early in the second quarter when Gulbin led them on a seven play 69 yard touchdown drive which at the time put Catholic up 7-0. Harvin moved Catholic into Moravian territory on a 30-yard rush, his longest of the game, to put the Cardinals on the Moravian 30. On fourth and 11, Gulbin threw a pass to Tabor with enough yards for the first, and Tabor accelerated down the sideline for a 31 yard reception for the first points of the game.

The win marked the first time in program history the Cardinals have beaten the Greyhounds and they are now above .500 in conference play at 2-1.

The Cardinals defense forced five turnovers in the win on three fumble recoveries and two interceptions. Ryan Creston and Carter Virsik both came up with interceptions and it was Virsik's first career interception.
