WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - Catholic used a pair of second quarter touchdowns and a stout defensive effort to defeat Lycoming 14-12 and earn its first Landmark win of the season on Saturday afternoon. The Cards move to 3-4 on the season while the Warriors fall to 2-4.
The Cardinals first scoring drive took over five minutes, starting late in the first quarter before
Joey Gulbin found
Ryan Smyth for the first touchdown of the game with 14:37 remaining in the first half. A 21-yard gain from
Daequan Harvin set the Cardinals up with 1st-and-goal from the five before Smyth's pulled down his first touchdown of the season.
After forcing a punt, the Cardinals took over once again with 11:19 left in the second quarter. Four straight Harvin runs totaled 48 yards, setting the Cardinals up on the Lycoming 32-yard line. Gulbin scrambled for 10 yards on third-and-six before an
Omari Owes rush set up Catholic inside the 10. After a six-yard completion to
Andrew Tabor and a two-yard
Zach Williams run, Gulbin snuck it in to give Catholic a 14-3 lead.
After a fourth down stop, Catholic traveled 65 yards, but Gulbin tossed an interception in the end zone, allowing Lycoming to take over possession. The Warriors marched down and kicked a 28-yard field goal just before halftime to make it 14-6.
The Cardinal offense continued to move the ball, but couldn't punch in another score in the second half. The defense continued to stand tall, getting a blocked kick early in the third quarter and another fourth down stop as the fourth quarter began.
Still trailing 14-6, the Warriors took over with 2:01 remaining in the contest. The Warriors matriculated the ball down the field, getting a successful fourth down conversion before the drive ended with a Jay Huber touchdown pass to Dawson Debebe. Forced to go for two, Huber dropped back to pass to tie the game, but it fell incomplete and the Cardinals escaped with the win.
Harvin put together a career performance, rushing for 157 yards on 32 attempts to keep the Cardinal offense in gear.
Malachi Hansen was the team's leader with 59 yards receiving while
Anthony Giordano went over 1,000 career receiving yards with seven receptions for 41 yards.
Shane Toal made nine tackles to top the defense while
Mason Stillwell added eight stops, 1.5 TFLs, and two PBUs.
Sean Holt had a team-high two TFLs, adding a sack as well.
Carson Henry,
Brendan Smith, and

The Cardinals will enjoy a week off before returning to Cardinal Stadium on November 2 vs. Keystone.
