Harvin Breaks Program Record as Cardinals Run to Victory Against Keystone

WASHINGTON, D.C.
- Daequan Harvin rushed for a program record 242 yards to lead Catholic (4-4, 2-2) to a 42-24 victory over Keystone (1-8, 0-5) on Saturday afternoon at Cardinal Stadium. The Cardinals rushed for 334 yards as a team, nearly reaching 500 yards of total offense as they finished the day with 485 yards and a new season-high in points scored.

Harvin found the end zone twice on the ground while Zach Williams and Joey Gulbin each added rushing scores for the Cardinals. Gulbin also had two passing touchdowns, marking his second career game with three or more touchdowns.

An exciting first quarter saw the Cardinals jump out to a 28-7 lead as they scored on their first four drives of the game. Keystone won the toss and elected to receive, but Donald Leach tossed an interception to Mason Stillwell on the third play of the game, setting the Cardinals up in Giants territory. Six plays later, Williams burst into the end zone from four yards out to put Catholic on top by a score.

After forcing another three-and-out, Catholic started its next drive on its own one-yard line before marching 99 yards on nine plays in 5:17 to take a 14-0 lead. Throwing on 1st-and-10 from the one, Gulbin gave Catholic some breathing room with a 28-yard completion to Andrew Tabor. Harvin rushed for 32 yards on the drive, helping Catholic to the Keystone 27 where Malachi Hansen was dragged down by the collar, setting Catholic up at the 13. Gulbin lofted the 1st-and-10 pass over the defender's outstretched arms and into Hansen's hands for a 13-yard score.

Keystone would score two plays later as Leach connected with Jayson Nami for a 69-yard score to pull the Giants back within one. However, Catholic wasted no time as Harvin sprinted past the defense on the first play of the next drive for a 75-yard score, the longest rush of his Catholic career, putting him over 100 yards in the opening quarter.

Catholic would force another turnover on the next play as Samuel Dumas punched the ball out of Mujaheed Muhammad's hands after a 14-yard gain. Sean Finan dove on the football to give it back to the Cardinals at the Keystone 41. Gulbin completed a 29-yard throw to Hansen to open the drive before taking it in himself from 11 yards out three plays later.

Keystone would score the next 10 points of the game in the second quarter with a 15-yard touchdown from Leach to Reese Karp and a 32-yard Jeremiah Ortiz field goal to make it 28-17.

The Cardinals found the end zone once more before the half, taking the ball 28 yards in 2:02 as Gulbin hit Tabor for a 10-yard score after buying himself time in the pocket and rolling left. Catholic got the ball in such great position thanks to a muffed punt recovered by Blake Morgan and would take a 35-17 lead into the break.

A much slower second half offensively saw each team add one more touchdown to their totals. Catholic opened up the second-half by taking the ball 77 yards on seven plays as Harvin burst through for a 42-yard touchdown scamper. Keystone would score on its final possession of the game, traveling 87 yards in 11 plays as Leach rushed it in from two yards out.

Harvin's final line was 23 rushes for 242 yards and two scores as he surpassed Andrew Notarfrancesco, Hall of Famer Matt Taylor, and Robert Narh's previous program record total of 233 rushing yards in a game. The record was first set in 1988 and was matched in 1996 and 1999 before Harvin's performance this afternoon.

Gulbin threw for 147 yards and two scores on 13-17 passing while Hansen and Tabor each went over 50 yards and a score.

Defensively, Catholic made five stops in the backfield, including a shared sack of Leach by Lawson Haylock and Carson Henry. Haylock had two TFLs in the contest. Stillwell added six tackles and two pass break-ups to go along with his interception.

Catholic will host Wilkes for Senior Day on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Cardinal Stadium.
