Spaeth Leads Cardinals in Two Comprehensive Wins over Marymount

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Catholic University softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon, taking two games from Marymount (Va.).

Sarah Spaeth and Olivia Stinchcomb had bigs days at the dish for Catholic.

GAME ONE — Catholic 12, Marymount 1 (5 innings)

The Cardinals jumped on the Saints early when Stinchcomb delivered in the bottom of the first. The freshman came through in clutch, converting with the bases juiced and two outs. She was able to get a hold of a 2-0 pitch, powering it into left field to clear the bases and push the Cardinals out to a 3-0 lead.

Spaeth then delivered in the next inning, blasting a two-run bomb down the left-field line. Her sixth career home run drove in Caroline Adams and offered Katie Hurd even more run support in the circle.

Hurd was dominant, earning the victory in the complete-game effort. She allowed just three hits and one earned run while striking out five Saints. The strong performance pushed her season ERA down to 2.10.

The Cardinals eliminated all doubt in the bottom of the fourth inning when they hung seven on Marymount. Katie Scolese and Alex Garza delivered RBI doubles of their own while Hurd helped her own cause with a sacrifice fly. Stinchcomb converted with a two-RBI single as well, pushing her total to five in the game.

GAME TWO — Catholic 6, Marymount 2

It was more of the same in game two as Catholic got out to a 2-0 lead after just one inning of play.

Amanda Gomez got the Cardinals going with an RBI groundout before Spaeth delivered again, this time singling to right field to push Adams across. The Cardinals then repeated the feat in the second inning, when Gomez and Spaeth again delivered one RBI each.

Head coach Bruce McConkey got a massive boost in game two, working Aubrynn Arcement and Sophia Fike back into the line-up for the first time in weeks after both missed time due to injuries.

Arcement returned with a brilliant performance, pitching a complete game and earning the victory in the circle. She allowed six hits and two earned runs in 7.0 innings, fanning five en route to her fifth win of the season.

Fike went 1-for-3 at the plate and drove in a Catholic run in the sixth. Spaeth also completed her perfect day at the plate with an RBI double in the same frame.

Over the two games, Spaeth went 4-for-4 with one home run, one double, two walks, five RBIs and four runs scored.

The wins push Catholic over the 20-win mark for the season ahead of a massive weekend of Landmark Conference softball. The Cardinals will host Juniata in a vital doubleheader on Saturday.

If the Cardinals sweep the Eagles, Catholic will earn a berth into the Landmark Conference tournament. A split with Juniata will enact an intense tiebreaker situation. The playoff picture will become more clear following Susquehanna and Drew's two-game set tomorrow afternoon.

First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
