Colangelo's Gem and Catholic's Fifth Inning Offense Against Wilkes Sends the Cardinals to Championship Sunday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Cardinals kept their championship dreams alive, defeating Wilkes in a win or go home matchup. Catholic only scored in the fifth inning, but it was enough to advance to Championship Sunday.

Sophia Colangelo earned the start in the circle for the Cardinals and Audrey Rinda received the nod on the Colonels' side. Catholic threatened a run in the first; Sam Grillo singled, advancing on a sacrifice bunt from Emma Fleming and a stolen base, but was left stranded at third. The second through fourth innings showed signs of a pitcher's duel with little offensive action.

In the top of the fifth, Katie McHugh laid down a first pitch bunt, beating out the throw at first and giving her team a spark. Kerri Hatcliffe followed it up with a single to right center, moving McHugh to third. Hatcliffe took advantage of McHugh on third to earn a stolen base. With two runners in scoring position and no outs, the momentum was in Catholic's favor. Hayden Hudson continued her Landmark Tournament coming out party with a two run RBI double, sending both Hatcliffe and McHugh scoring. With outs to spare, Geneva Webber laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Hudson to third. Sam Grillo sent the third run of the inning scoring with her sacrifice fly to left field. After five complete innings, Catholic held the 3-0 lead.

Catholic was unable to push any more runs across in the sixth inning, but Colangelo and her defense were able to hold things down for the remainder of the game, pulling out the 3-0 win over Wilkes.

Today's win marks 31 wins on the season, the second consecutive year reaching that number.
