FAIRFAX, Va. — The Catholic University women's rowing team made the short trip to the Occoquan Reservoir to compete at the Mid-Atlantic Rowing Championships on Sunday morning.
Teams competed on waters that were generally smooth. Temperatures at the finish line were around 67 degrees with slight rain falling at times but no wind.
Catholic's first varsity eight finished third in its heat to grab the final qualifying spot into the grand final. The Cardinal boat went 7:48.3 to join the likes of St. Mary's (Md.) and Bryn Mawr in the final, beating the Milwaukee School of Engineering and Cabrini to the line. The Cardinals had a tough go of it in the final, rowing nearly 20 seconds slower to finish sixth.
Catholic's varsity four grabbed a third-place finish in the straight final with a time of 8:58.3 to earn the bronze medal. Adrian won the heat over Franklin and Marshall while the Cardinals beat out Washington College and Stockton.
Liz Dorrian (First Team), Katie Chmielewski (Second Team), and Anne Mountcastle (Novice) earned All-Conference honors for Catholic. Phoebe Farris, Kailen May, Abigail Harris, Marguerite Collette, Katherine Hourani, and Dorrian earned All-Academic honors.
Katie O'Driscoll's team will now take a weekend off from competition before traveling to Pennsauken, N.J., for the highly-regarded Dad Vail Regatta. The two-day event will commence on Friday, May 12, at 7:30 a.m.
