Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Catholic University men's lacrosse team fell to Landmark Conference rivals in a tight contest on Carlini Field on Saturday.
In a game that was delayed for two hours due to inclement weather, there was very little to separate the two teams. Even play saw the score tied at the end of the first three quarters but it was Scranton who pulled it out in the final stanza.
Sophomore Victor Rosado again stamped his impact on the game, scoring or assisting on six of the eight Cardinal goals. This marks the seventh-straight game that Rosado has registered five or more points.
His unassisted goal got the scoring started six minutes into the game and, after Scranton equalized, he found Mike Mulligan who unleashed an absolute laser to beat Declan Allen in the Royal net.
After the Royals went up 3-2, Kevin Ortlieb equalized before Cooper DiCicco won his face-off cleanly and went straight toward goal, scoring just six seconds later to swing the score into the Cardinals' favor.
Catholic and Scranton continued to trade blows throughout the game until the late a mini Royal run was enough for the team in purple. After Mitchell Kozak scored with 71 seconds remaining in the third quarter, Alex Eglitis and Jason Kozak netted in the fourth quarter to push Scranton out to a 9-7 lead with 7:40 remaining.
Connor Pierce found the net after a darting run off the left side with 4:14 remaining to bring the Cardinals within one, but Catholic could not find the equalizer before a late Christopher Crapanza tally iced the game for the visitors.
Nic Pezone played well in the Cardinal goal, making 13 saves while only conceding nine goals. He also added a team-high four ground balls and caused a turnover.
The result pushed Scranton even with Catholic at 5-1 in Landmark Conference play toward the top of the conference standings. The Royals now own the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Cardinals with regular-season play concluding next Saturday.
Catholic will now turn its attention to a midweek trip to national power Salisbury. The Cardinals will travel to the No. 2 Sea Gulls before going to Elizabethtown a week from today to conclude the regular season.
