Box Score 2 WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic softball freshman Katie Scolese hit a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning in game two to salvage a split for the Cardinals on Sunday afternoon.
GAME ONE - Catholic 1-2 Drew
The Drew Rangers scored two runs in the first inning of game one and then held Catholic to just one run as they took the first of two on Sunday. Caroline Adams had two hits, a walk, a stolen base, and the lone RBI for Catholic in the contest.
Molly O'Brien hit a two-run homer with one out in the first off of Catholic starter Katie Hurd to put Drew up 2-0. Hurd settled in and pitched 4.0 innings, allowing five hits and just the two first-inning runs. Justina Benvenuto pitched the final 3.0 innings and allowed just two hits.
The Cardinals had a chance in the first as Adams singled and then moved up to third on a pair of passed balls. Scolese drew a walk with two away, but Adams was caught too far off the third base bag and was thrown out by Drew catcher Delaney O'Donoghue.
Catholic got on the board in the third with Hailee Weiss leading off the inning with a single before coming around to score. Alex Garza moved Weiss into scoring position for Adams with a sacrifice bunt. Weiss moved up on a wild pitch and scored on Adams' single up the middle. Adams stole second, but Bailey Comeau retired the next two batters.
Amanda Gomez singled and moved to third in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Comeau got Sarah Spaeth to fly out and end the inning. The Cardinals loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh inning, but Gomez's fly ball to right field was caught to give the Rangers the victory.
GAME TWO - Catholic 3-2 Drew
Scolese played the hero in game two, blasting a solo homer to center in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Catholic a 3-2 victory and a split with the Rangers.
Trailing 2-1 in the fifth, Catholic tied the contest in the bottom of the inning before a pair of scoreless innings took the game to extras. Garza ripped a one-out double to left and moved up to third on a single off the bat of Adams. Gomez singled up the middle to tie the contest at 2-2. Scolese lined out to center and Adams was caught off the second base bag to end the inning.
Olivia Stinchcomb worked through 3.2 scoreless innings to turn it over to Scolese to lead it off in the bottom of the eighth. Scolese squared up a Teagan Bradley pitch and smacked her third home run of the season to win the game for Catholic.
Weiss drove in Aubrynn Arcement in the bottom of the second for Catholic's first run of the game. Arcement ripped a double off the wall before Weiss brought her in with a single to center.
Arcement started the game in the circle, pitching 4.1 innings and allowing one earned run. Stinchcomb earned the win to improve to 3-2 on the season.
Catholic hosts Mary Washington on Tuesday afternoon at the Catholic Softball Field.
