Box Score 2 BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The Catholic University softball team dropped a conference doubleheader to Moravian on Sunday.
GAME ONE: Moravian 7, Catholic 6
Catholic dropped a back-and-forth affair in game one that ultimately ended with late-game heroics from the Greyhounds.
Moravian utilized some clever baserunning to jump out to an early lead. With two outs in the first and runners on the corners, head coach Josh Baltz put Lindsay Gawyrs into motion with a steal of second base. Catholic threw the ball away, allowing Holly Walter to score from third.
Catholic loaded the bases in the top of the third with just one out, but starting pitcher Madi Cunningham was able to work out of the jam. She forced Amanda Gomez to ground into a fielder's choice and cut the run down at home plate before securing a clutch flyout to end the Cardinal threat.
Sloppy play from the Cardinals allowed Moravian to push across two more in the bottom of the inning. After the Greyhound leadoff batter reached on a Catholic error, an RBI double doubled the home team's lead. Then, a two-out wild pitch pushed Moravian out to a 3-0 lead.
Catholic took advantage of a Moravian error to mount a rally in the fourth. Amy Gastright reached to leadoff the inning before Olivia Stinchcomb doubled to put two runners in scoring position. Back-to-back RBI singles from Sarah Spaeth and Kaitlyn Murphy plated a run each, and after a successful sacrifice bunt by Hailee Weiss, Alex Garza tied the game with an RBI single of her own.
The Cardinals pushed ahead in the sixth inning when Scolese produced a massive at-bat with the bases loaded. The impressive freshman pushed a single through the right side that allowed Garza and Caroline Adams to score.
The Greyhounds equalized in the bottom of the inning when Emily Silberman produced her second RBI single of the day but Bruce McConkey's team again took the lead in the top of seventh, when Adams drove in Garza with a single. All six of Catholic's RBIs came on singles.
However, Moravian got the last laugh as the Greyhounds blasted two home runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie and ultimately win the game. Silberman continued her monster day with a pinch-hit, lead-off home run to pull level yet again, before Walter won the game with a two-out blast.
GAME TWO: Moravian 9, Catholic 0
The Cardinals failed to get anything going at the plate in game two as they were ultimately shutout.
Greyhound starting pitcher Sarah DeStefano scattered six Catholic hits over 5.0 innings of work to earn the win. She struck out six and moved to an impressive 10-1 on the season.
After a scoreless first inning, Moravian plated six runs in the second and added three more in the fourth. DeStefano and the Greyhound then held the Cardinals scoreless in the top of the fifth to ensure the game ended via the run rule.
Garza registered two hits in both games of the doubleheader while Adams secured a three-hit game in game one.
Catholic will face a quick turnaround as it will travel to Westminster, Md., on Tuesday to complete an eight-game road trip. The Cardinals will do battle with the McDaniel Green Terror in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch in game one is slated for 3 p.m.
