WASHINGTON, D.C. - James Earwood and Ben Annunziato both secured singles wins for the Catholic men's tennis team as it fell to Goucher 7-2 on Wednesday afternoon.
With junior Allan Van Nostrand unavailable, Catholic coach Nate Farlow moved his men up the ladder to face the Gophers. Despite putting up a strong fight in multiple matches, the Cardinals fell short in the Landmark Conference afternoon tilt.
Diego Romo and Matt Rudolf bumped up to No. 1 doubles and fell down 5-0 before rallying to drop the match 8-5 against Calis Nguyen and Jackson Beam.
Moving up to No. 1 singles, Earwood took down Angel Cerpa in a tiebreaker, winning 4-6, 6-4, 10-5. Annunziato won at No. 6 singles despite dropping the first set 6-2. He rallied to win 6-0 before winning 10-5 in the tiebreaker.
Romo and Rudolf both forced third-set tiebreaks at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, but each ultimately fell as Romo was downed 4-6, 6-4, 5-10, and Rudolf fell 6-3, 3-6, 4-10.
The Cardinals host Juniata for a Landmark Conference match at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
