Men’s Tennis Competes at ITA Southeast Regional Championship

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The Catholic men's tennis team participated in the ITA Southeast Regional Championship on that began on Thursday. The Cardinals competed against other Division III athletes at the event which was hosted by Mary Washington.

In singles, Lorenzo Neri battled against Allan Xu of Johns Hopkins University. He lost 6-1, 6-0. In the consolation match against Virginia Wesleyan's Joshua Buckland, Neri put up a strong fight, but fell 8-6.

Flynn Hollinger also competed in singles for the Cardinals, first facing off against Alexandre Gaboardi of Lynchburg. He won the first set, 6-4, but Gaboardi forced a tie break after winning set three, 6-3. Gaboardi pulled out the victory in the tiebreak, winning 10-6. 

In Friday doubles matches, Hollinger and Jake Hershey took on Francisco Ubeda and Andres Ballerino from Lynchburg College. Hollinger and Hershey nearly pulled out the win, but the Hornets fought back, winning 8-5.

Neri and Ian Arenas also compated in doubles for Catholic, first squaring off against Carnegie Mellon's Theodore Gershon and Jayden Yu early on Friday morning. The two couldn't take down the Tartans, falling 8-2. Later in the morning, they paired up against Dickinson's Lucas Bogle and Antonis Malavazos. The Dickinson opponents secured the win with a score of 6-2.

Hollinger will continue to compete at the ITA Southeast Regionals in singles on Saturday, October 3. Hollinger and Hershey will also pair up once again for doubles on Saturday.
