Five Players Score Multiple Goals as No. 21 Cardinals Earn Midweek Win

Box Score

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. — The No. 21 Catholic University women's lacrosse team picked up its second win of the season as they knocked off St. Mary's (Md.) in a midweek contest.

Five Cardinals scored multiple goals as Catholic knocked off the Seahawks 12-8. Grace Hill led the way for the Cardinals by netting a hat trick while Kate Olsen, Izzy Fiore, Anna Corona and Lindsay Sawyer all scored two apiece.

St. Mary's took an early lead less than a minute into the contest but Sawyer took a feed from Olsen to respond for the Cardinals and equalize just 30 seconds later. The team then turned that into a mini 3-0 run off of goals by Hill and Corona to push ahead. Sawyers and Hill added their second of the quarter to extend the Catholic advantage to 5-3 with Hill's second coming with just 14 ticks remaining on the clock.

Catholic won the second stanza as well via free-position goals from Olsen and Hill and a player-advantage tally from Fiore.

After the Cardinals took a 9-5 lead to the break, the second half became more of a defensive affair. Catholic made it difficult for the Seahawks to gain any ground, matching St. Mary's blow-for-blow down the stretch. The teams were both able to muster two tallies in the third quarter and only one in the fourth.

Rachel Rubenstein justified her Landmark Conference Defensive Athlete of the Week selection with a massive defensive effort. She scooped up a game-high six ground balls while also claiming two draw controls and causing a turnover. Caroline Beckett grabbed four ground balls while Jessie Lee won seven draw controls.

Freshman goalkeeper Laura Sullivan made three saves and collected four ground balls en route to her second collegiate win and her first 60-minute victory.

The Cardinals will now begin a three game home stand. Meghan McDonogh's team will welcome Washington and Lee to Carlini Field on Saturday with opening draw control set for 1 p.m.
