Box Score 2 KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Catholic softball remains .500 on the season after another doubleheader split on Monday afternoon at The Spring Games. Catholic dropped a tight 3-2 game to Coast Guard before defeating La Roche 20-2 later in the evening.
GAME ONE – Catholic 2-3 Coast Guard
Catholic took a 2-0 lead in the second inning of Monday afternoon's contest versus Coast Guard, but fell 3-2 after the Bears scored two runs in the fourth to take the lead.
After Amy Gastright singled to lead off the bottom of the second, senior third baseman Sarah Spaeth cranked her first home run of the season to put Catholic ahead 2-0.
Coast Guard cut the lead to one in the top of the third, scoring after a pair of walks and a pair of errors. In the fourth, Coast Guard's Mariah Dewey homered off Olivia Stinchcomb to take a 3-2 lead.
Aubrynn Arcement came on to pitch the rest of the contest for the Cardinals, allowing just one hit over 3.1 innings, but Catholic couldn't push another run across.
Katie Scolese, Arcement, and Alex Garza joined Spaeth and Gastright in the hit column. Scolese reached base twice, drawing Catholic's lone walk of the game.
GAME TWO – Catholic 20-2 La Roche
Catholic racked up 16 hits and drew 10 walks to score 20 runs in Monday evening's 20-2 victory over La Roche, giving Catholic a split for the day.
14 different players recorded a hit for the Cardinals and 12 players drove in a run during the victory.
Grace Tolle blasted a three-run homer in a nine-run first inning for the Cardinals. Garza, Bella Ronca, and Kaitlyn Murphy each hit doubles for Catholic with Garza and Murphy joining Caroline Adams with two RBI in the contest.
Catholic stole four bases in the win with Garza, Ronca, Sophia Fike, and Lilianna Vidal each swiping a bag.
In the circle for Catholic, Justina Benvenuto pitched 3.0 scoreless innings, striking out three to pick up the win. Alexa Wienclaw pitched the final two frames for the Cards, allowing a pair of unearned runs.
Catholic will play another doubleheader on Tuesday before an off day on Wednesday. The Cardinals will take on Marian (Wis.) and Illinois College tomorrow with the first game scheduled for 9 a.m.
