FROSTBURG, Md. — The Catholic University women's tennis team faced strong opponents on Wednesday afternoon, succumbing to DII Frostburg State.
In a match that saw first-year head coach Nate Farlow return to his alma mater, the Cardinals gained some useful experience against DII competition.
Graduate student Brooke Simonson played the match of the day, falling to Alyssa Kush in a barnburner at No. 1 singles.
Simonson dropped the opening set by a break but was able to battle back and take the second set to a tiebreak as there was very little to separate the two. The graduate student used her experience to take the tiebreak before ultimately falling to Kush in the third-set tiebreak (5-7, 7-6(5), 3-10).
Simonson combined with Abbey Cassidy at the top doubles position, falling to the top Bobcat pair 2-6.
Catholic's other two doubles pairs—Jane Krukiel/Marissa Stambaugh and Aubree Narus/Paige Brightwell—both fell in their respective matches, 4-6. Narus played well at the No. 4 singles, edging out to an early 4-3 lead before falling in straight sets (4-6, 2-6).
The Cardinals will now turn their attention back to conference plays. They will host two Landmark Conference opponents this weekend, beginning of a six-match homestand at the Dowd Family Tennis Courts.
Scranton will come to town on Saturday before Drew travels to The District on Sunday. Opening service in both matches is scheduled for 1 p.m.
