Scolese Comes Up Big in Doubleheader Sweep of Washington College

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Catholic University softball picked up a pair of victories at Washington College on Wednesday, defeating the Shorewomen by scores of 10-6 and 3-1 to improve to 10-6 on the season. 

GAME ONE – Catholic 10-6 Washington College

Catholic jumped out to a 7-0 lead through four innings on Wednesday afternoon. The Shorewomen pushed three runs across in both the sixth and seventh innings, but Catholic added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh to help secure a 10-6 win in game one.

Katie Scolese homered and drove in four runs for Catholic while Sophia Fike and Aubrynn Arcement each chipped in with a pair of RBI. Katie Hurd picked up her third win of the season in the circle for Catholic, tossing 4.0 scoreless innings.

The Cardinals wasted no time jumping out ahead of Washington College, scoring three runs in the first inning. Alex Garza led off the game with a single to center. With one away, Fike singled, moving Garza up to third. Arcement drove in the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly to center field before Scolese cracked a two-run shot to put Catholic ahead 3-0.

Catholic scored four more in the fourth with Caroline Adams opening up the frame with a free pass. Garza singled again and the bases were loaded after Amanda Gomez was hit by a pitch. Fike singled, scoring Adams to make it 4-0. Arcement drew a bases-loaded walk to put Catholic up by five before Scolese struck again with a two-run single to center, making the lead seven for the Cards.

Leading 7-3 in the seventh, Catholic grabbed a few insurance runs. Kaitlyn Murphy doubled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After Adams reached on an error, Garza picked up her third single of the game to score Murphy. Gomez singled to score Adams and make it 9-3 before the final run came home via fielder's choice off the bat of Fike.

The Shorewomen struck for three more runs in the bottom of the inning, but Justina Benvenuto got a groundout with a pair of runners on base to end the contest. 

Catholic tallied 13 hits in the game with Garza and Fike picking up three hits each. Gomez and Scolese each had a pair of hits in the contest. Sarah Spaeth roped her fifth double of the season in the win.

GAME TWO - Catholic 3-1 Washington College

Catholic scored all three of its runs in the sixth and seventh innings of Wednesday's second contest to pick up a 3-1 victory and a sweep over the Shorewomen. 

Arcement started in the circle for Catholic, pitching 4.2 innings, allowing just three hits and one run. Olivia Stinchcomb was perfect in relief, retiring the seven batters she faced to earn her second win of the season. 

Scolese came up big once more, driving in a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning to lead Catholic to victory. Tied 1-1 in the top of the seventh, Garza drew a lead-off walk to get things going. Fike laced a double to center, putting two runners in scoring position with just one out Washington College's Emmie Meeks retired Arcement to bring Scolese up with two outs. Scolese pulled a double down the line in left, scoring both runners to put Catholic ahead 3-1. 

An inning earlier, Stinchcomb got it done at the plate to give Catholic its first run of the contest. After Scolese and Spaeth each singled, Stinchcomb singled to center, scoring Adams who was pinch-running for Scolese. 

Scolese had three more hits in the game, giving her at least one hit in five of her last six games. Fike and Gomez each doubled for the Cardinals in the win. 

Catholic will head to Susquehanna on Sunday for a doubleheader to open up Landmark Conference play.
