Box Score 2 COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – After Sunday's previously scheduled doubleheader at Wilkes was cancelled due to cold weather, the Catholic University softball team traveled to Ursinus on Saturday and split a doubleheader with the Bears.
GAME ONE – Catholic 0-2 Ursinus
In game one, Katie Hurd pitched 4.0 innings allowing just one run, but the Cardinal offense couldn't get it going against Ursinus starter Christa Andrusiewicz, falling 2-0.
Sophia Fike, Amanda Gomez, Katie Scolese, and Hailee Weiss each singled for the Cardinals, but Catholic didn't push a base runner past second base after the first inning.
Fike and Gomez singled to start the game and moved up to second and third on a wild pitch, but Aubrynn Arcement, Scolese, and Sarah Spaeth were retired in order to keep Catholic from pushing a run across early on.
Hurd cruised through four innings of action before allowing a leadoff triple to Maddie Solow in the bottom of the fifth inning. Allyson Meakim singled to score Solow and Bruce McConkey made a change on the mound, bringing on Justina Benvenuto. Benvenuto retired the next three hitters to keep it a 1-0 game.
Gomez drew a walk in the sixth, but Arcement grounded into a double play to end the inning. The Bears pushed a run across against Benvenuto, getting an RBI single from Stephanie Wichman in the bottom of the sixth inning for some added insurance.
Scolese led off the seventh with a single and moved up to second on an error, but the Cardinals were unsuccessful in moving her any further.
GAME TWO – Catholic 2-1 Ursinus
Scolese came up clutch for Catholic to pull out a victory in game two despite the Ursinus pitching staff continuing to have success against the Cardinal offense.
Catholic trailed 1-0 heading into the sixth inning before Scolese struck. Arcement hit a one-out double to put a baserunner on for Catholic and force a pitching change. Scolese stepped up to the plate and blasted a two-run shot to right center to put the Cardinals ahead 2-1.
Olivia Stinchcomb came on to pitch for Arcement in the bottom of the sixth and retired the first five batters she faced. Jessica Pizzo singled with two outs in the seventh, but Stinchcomb struck out Sara Sullivan looking in the seventh to close it out and earn the save.
Arcement pitched 5.0 innings, allowing four hits and one unearned run to earn her third win of the season. Spaeth joined Arcement with a double in the contest. Fike and Hurd each had singles for Catholic.
Catholic sits at 8-6 on the season and will travel to Washington College for a doubleheader on Wednesday.
