SELINSGROVE, Pa. — The Catholic University men's tennis team opened conference play with a comprehensive victory over Susquehanna on Saturday afternoon.
Nate Farlow's team battled on every court, only dropping a single match en route to the 8-1 victory.
Allan Van Nostrand and James Earwood earned an impressive victory at the top doubles position, coming through in a hard-fought tiebreak. Diego Romo and Matt Rudolf also earned a win on the doubles courts, pulling through 8-4 at No. 2 doubles.
Rudolf battled through a marathon match at No. 4 singles, coming out on top in the deciding tiebreak. Taking on Susquehanna's Tommy Hallahan, he was able to take the first set by a break. Then, after dropping the second set in a tiebreak, the senior came through with an emphatic win in the tiebreak (6-4, 6-7(6), 10-2).
Catholic took care of business in straight sets at all the other singles positions. Van Nostrand (No. 1 singles; 6-4, 6-2), Earwood (No. 2 singles; 6-0, 6-4) and Romo (No. 3 singles; 6-4, 6-2) all completed two-win days while Henry Ogden and Leyton Ramos-Platt picked up victories at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
Ogden came out on top 6-2, 6-1 while Ramos-Platt picked up the win, 6-3, 6-1.
The Cardinals face a quick turn around as they will immediately return to action tomorrow. Catholic will battle Randolph-Macon in its only home match of the month. Opening service is set for noon.
