Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. – No. 18 Catholic women's lacrosse used a 5-0 third-quarter run to take an 11-7 lead before coming away with a 14-10 victory on Wednesday evening at Carlini Field.
Grace Hill led Catholic's offense, netting five goals, while Kate Olsen scored a hat trick for the second consecutive contest. Freshman Izzy Fiore was the third Cardinal to net multiple goals, scoring her first two collegiate tallies and adding one assist.
The Cardinals jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, getting goals from Olsen and Hill in the first six minutes of the contest. Caroline Beckett notched the first of her three assists on Olsen's goal, the first of the game at the 10:02 mark. Hill followed less than a minute later, scoring off an assist from Mia Scarduzio.
The Yellow Jackets scored the final three goals of the quarter to hold a 3-2 advantage before Hill's second goal of the game tied it just 33 second into the second period. Ransolph-Macon took a 5-3 lead with 5:29 left in the first half before three straight Catholic goals earned them the halftime lead.
With 3:56 left in the first half, Beckett scored a woman-down goal to bring the Cardinals back within one. With 2:10 left, Hill tied it with her third goal of the game with an assist from Lindsay Sawyer, who utilized a free position to pick out Hill. Finally, Shelby Graser scored with just seven seconds left in the half to put the Cardinals on top after 30 minutes of action.
Randolph-Macon scored the first two goals of the third period, taking a 7-6 lead with 7:10 remaining in the third, but Catholic ripped off five straight goals to break the game open.
Maddie Rinker started the run scoring a woman-up goal off a Beckett assist to tie the game with 5:23 to play in the third. Olsen then gave Catholic the lead, scoring off a pass from Fiore with 3:40 left in the third. Fiore then scored back-to-back goals within 30 seconds of each other to extend Catholic's lead to 10-7. Finally, Olsen scored again with just over two minutes remaining in the period to make it 11-7 Catholic. The Rinker tally was the first of her career.
The Yellow Jackets netted the first two goals of the final stanza to cut the deficit to just two before Catholic scored three straight to ice the game. Hill struck again with back-to-back tallies before Madeline Kelly scored her first goal of the season.
Hill stuffed the stat-sheet, adding five ground balls, five draw controls and two caused turnovers to her five-goal performance. Rachel Rubenstein was also dominant on the defensive end, claiming six ground balls, winning five draw controls and causing three turnovers. Grace Murphy also caused three turnovers while Lauren Bendo, Sawyer and Beckett each scooped up three ground balls.
Catholic will be back in action on Carlini Field on Saturday when they host Dickinson. The Cardinals are in the midst of a run where they plays five out of six games on their home turf.
