Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Catholic University women's basketball team held its second-straight opponent to less than 43 points in a Wednesday-night victory over Juniata.
It was also the second-striaght game that a Cardinal acheived a career-high point total. Rachel Bussanich did the honors tonight in an extremely efficient performance. The senior scored 25 points on 8-of-11 shooting and went 8-of-9 from the free-throw line in 25 minutes of action. She also added six rebounds, one steal and one block.
Juniata kept the contest close through the entire first quarter as Catholic took a slim two-point advantage into the second stanza. After Sarah Betts tied the game for the Eagles at the 7:42 mark of the second quarter, the Cardinals put together a 17-2 run to close the quarter and take a 15-point lead to halftime.
Catholic's intense defense continued for the duration of the game, as Matt Donohue's team allowed less than10 points in each of the final three quarters. The Cardinals outscored the Eagles 33-14 in the second half.
Anna Scoblick also had a brilliant and efficient game, scoring 11 points in 12 minutes on 5-for-5 shooting. Sammie McCarter pitched in with eight points and Erin Doherty scored seven while Sarah White contributed five points and six rebounds.
While the Cardinals did not shoot the ball particularly well, especially from three-point range, defense and transition play were key areas for coach Donohue's team. Catholic pounded the paint, bettering the Eagles 46-22 on the inside and 24-7 in the fast break. The Cardinals also forced 30 turnovers and held Juniata to just 2-of-18 from beyond the three-point line (11.1 percent).
Catholic also shared the rock at a high level, registering 16 assists on 28 made baskets. Keegan Douglas led the way with six assists and also registered four steals as 15 Cardinals featured in the contest and 13 scored at least two points.
With the victory, Catholic improves to 18-6 overall and 9-4 in the Landmark Conference.
The Cardinals will now prepare for their regular-season finale, a Saturday matinee against Drew. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. with Senior Day programming taking place prior to the beginning of the game.
