WASHINGTON, D.C. - After falling behind 36-14, Catholic scored twice in the third quarter to narrow the deficit to eight, but Moravian used a lengthy clock-chewing drive to come away the victor on Saturday afternoon, 36-28. Catholic drops to 2-4 on the season ahead of the Cardinal Weekend matchup with Lycoming.
Zach Williams scored his first career touchdown for Catholic and
John Maynes added a pair of receiving touchdowns in the Catholic effort. Veteran wideout
Preston Jeffrey found the end zone for the sixth time this season as well.
Catholic started the scoring on the fourth drive of the game, forcing a pair of Moravian punts sandwiched around a Cardinal fumble.
Madden Lowe and the Catholic offense chewed up 81 yards across 13 plays in the 4:40 scoring drive that put the Cardinals ahead 7-0 with a three-yard score to a wide-open Maynes in the corner of the end zone. Lowe was a perfect seven-for-seven on the drive, throwing for 43 yards and rushing for 15.
Moravian's answer spanned the final 3:27 of the first quarter and nearly two minutes of the second as Jared Jenkins found Brad Bryan for a three-yard score. Jenkins rushed for 19 yards on third-and-nine to move the chains and set up a first-and-goal. The Greyhounds converted a two-point try to take an 8-7 lead.
Moravian caused a fumble on the ensuing kick and scored three plays later as Jenkins hit Jordan Lewis for a five-yard touchdown. After another two-point conversion, it was 16-7 Moravian with 12:08 left in the first half.
Coach
Mike Gutelius's squad provided a strong answer, pulling within two points as Williams capped off a 13-play drive with a six-yard score, the first of his career. The senior tailback finished the day with 86 total yards on nine touches, including the score.
Adam Shaker's offense was efficient, as Lowe completed eight-of-nine throws on the drive. Lowe found
Malachi Hansen for a crucial 31-yard pickup after a Jeremy McGuigan sack forced a third-and-15.
Moravian ate up most of the remaining second quarter clock with a 6:19 scoring drive, spanning 15 plays and finishing with a touchdown pass to Tim Garlick. Lowe fumbled on the first play of Catholic's drive and the Greyhounds added a touchdown on the final play of the half to take a 28-14 lead.
Jenkins' fifth touchdown pass of the day on fourth-and-five put Moravian on top 36-14 with 10:30 remaining in the third period, but Catholic wasn't done yet. After two completions for 26 yards, Catholic went to the ground, getting eight yards from
Cade Chrebet before Williams rumbled 34 yards down to the one-yard line. Lowe found Jeffrey from one-yard out for a score, narrowing the gap to 36-20.
Three plays into Moravian's drive,
Ryan Creston picked off a Jenkins' pass attempt, setting up Catholic on the Moravian 16-yard line. However, on second-and-goal from the one, Lowe was intercepted in the end zone by Matt Capobianco. Moravian tried a fake punt on fourth-and-six, but it was intercepted by
Michael Hopkins and returned to the 30-yard line. Lowe found Maynes on third-and-five for a completion and Maynes made multiple defenders miss on his trek to the end zone. Maynes also caught the two point conversion, making it a one-score game with 17 seconds left in the quarter.
Catholic picked off Moravian once again in the fourth quarter as
Samuel Dumas came away with an interception. Dumas returned it all the way for the score, but the play was called back to the Catholic 45 after a block in the back on the return. Catholic couldn't capitalize and was forced to punt with 10:28 remaining. The Cardinals never saw the ball again as the Greyhounds ate up the remaining time on a 19-play, 62-yard drive.
The Greyhounds nearly doubled Catholic's possession time, holding the ball for 39:56 to Catholic's 20:04. Moravian was five-for-six on fourth down in the contest. Hopkins added 12 tackles to go along with his interception, including two TFLs.
Mason Stillwell and
Aidan Long made nine tackles each as Long and Dumas each added a pass break-up.
Conor Jennings had six tackles and two TFLs for Catholic as well.
The Cardinals host Lycoming next weekend as they look to jump into the win column in Landmark Conference play.
