WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic football fell to Lycoming in a rain-soaked outing on Saturday afternoon, 28-25, after the Warriors scored a pair of touchdowns within two minutes of each other in the fourth quarter. The Cardinals dropped to 2-5 on the year with a bye week upcoming.
Catholic fell down 28-17 after a pair of fourth quarter Lycoming scores, starting with a Quasim Benson one-yard run to cap off a 12-play, 56-yard drive. After forcing a three-and-out, Catholic had a costly turnover, botching the snap on a punt attempt to set up Lycoming with the ball on the one-yard line. Terrance Oliver ran it in for an 11-point lead.
The Cardinals marched 75 yards in nine plays as
Nico Casares found
Preston Jeffrey for a 35-yard score to bring Catholic within two after a successful two-point conversion. The onside kick attempt was unsuccessful, but Catholic held tough with a full complement of timeouts and got the ball back after recovering a fumble on fourth-and-two.
However, on the second play of the last-ditch drive, Casares was picked off by Jordan Rhinehart to seal the deal for Lycoming.
Casares replaced starting quarterback
Madden Lowe in the second quarter and proceeded to throw it 67 times, completing 45 of them for 399 yards and three scores. Jeffrey logged his second game of the season with more than 100 yards as he made nine grabs for 159 yards. His 35-yard score was the 26th receiving touchdown of his career and marks his third straight game with a score.
Jeffrey wasn't the only pass catcher to have a career day.
Anthony Giordano set new career-highs with 11 catches for 94 yards in the contest while
John Maynes (7-82) and
Sam Cornacchione (7-36) both found the end zone for Catholic.
Maynes caught the first score of the day with 8:57 left in the second quarter, capping off a masterful drive for Catholic. Casares led the Cardinals on a 13-play, 91-yard drive in 4:03 with a nine-yard swing to Maynes, who ran around the Lycoming defense for the score. After trailing 14-10 at the half, Catholic opened the second half with an 11-play, 71-yard drive with three crucial catches from Maynes ultimately leading to a one-yard strike to Cornacchione for six points.
Defensively,
Carson Henry added nine tackles and two TFLs while
Tyler Donnelly, making his first career start, logged and interception and two pass break-ups.
Aidan Long also broke up a pair of passes.
Casares set program-records with 45 completions and 67 pass attempts despite not starting the contest for Catholic. The Cardinals 78 pass attempts are the most in a game in program history as are the 52 completions.
