Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. – Catholic University men's basketball improved to 18-1 on Saturday with an 82-60 victory over Moravian. Jesse Hafemeister registered a double-double and was one of four Cardinals in double figures.
Catholic got off to a quick start, getting triples from Dan Buckley and Brian Herbert during a 13-2 run over the first 5:30 of the contest. Tommy Kelly joined in on the three-point action, putting the Cardinals up 18-4 before the Greyhounds answered with a 5-0 run.
With the lead back to 10 for Catholic, Jake Melady knocked in his first three of the contest with 4:47 to go in the first to make it 29-16. Melady hit another 45 seconds later to keep Catholic's lead at 13.
Colby Martins got to the rim with 2:43 left in the half to push the Cardinal lead to 15 for the first time. Marquis Ratcliff scored to put the Greyhounds back within 12, but Catholic went on a 6-0 run over the final 40 seconds of the half to take an 18-point lead into the locker room. Herbert, Buckley, and Hafemeister all recorded steals that led to fast break layups for Kelly and Buckley.
The lead continued to grow in the second 20 minutes as Hafemeister opened the scoring with a three of his own to make it 47-26 Cardinals. Moravian cut it down to 16 with 14:07 to play, but a CJ Ruoff layup with 12:33 remaining pushed Catholic's lead back over 20.
At the 11:11 and 10:43 marks respectively, Jake Timby and Martins scored from deep and the Catholic lead swelled to 66-39. The Cardinals led by as many as 31 after a Herbert layup put them up 70-39. The Greyhounds got back within 20 before the Cardinals closed out the 22-point win.
Kelly (16), Buckley (13), and Herbert (12) all joined Hafemeister in double figures. Hafemeister scored 11 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, handed out five assists, and nabbed four steals for Catholic. Martins had nine points and six rebounds off the bench for the Cardinals.
Catholic hits the road for back-to-back contests starting on Wednesday evening at Goucher.
