WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Catholic University men's tennis team opened its fall season at home on Saturday, falling to Harford Community College.
Freshman Diego Romo earned his first career victory in some style, battling back from a set down to take the victory at No. 4 singles. Romo overcame a nervous first set to win the second by a break, and took care of business in the tiebreak to claim the win (2-6, 7-5, 10-4).
Romo combined with Matt Rudolf at No. 2 Doubles, battling in a tough match and falling just short, losing by a break (6-8).
Juan Gomez Vitta played well at No. 1 singles, dropping a competitive three-set contest. Last year's All-Landmark Conference second team selection traded sets with Jaroslav Matstor before eventually succumbing in the decisive set (2-6, 6-3, 1-6).
A number of athletes made their collegiate debuts in the match, including Romo, James Earwood, Nathaniel Barish, and Leyton Ramos-Platt.
The Cardinals are next in action in a week's time, when they travel to St. Mary's (Md.). Opening service is set for noon.
