Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic men's tennis team hosted the third-seeded Goucher on Friday afternoon for the Landmark Conference Semifinal match. The Cardinals fell to the Gophers in a hard-fought battle, 4-2.
Catholic put up a fight across all three doubles courts, but Goucher secured the point to take an early lead.
Jake Hershey and
Flynn Hollinger matched up closely against their Goucher opponents on court three, but ultimately fell 6-4.
Ian Arenas and
Lorenzo Neri were neck-and-neck on court two, winning 5-4, but the race concluded early as the Gophers secured the doubles point in the one spot.
In singles, Arenas secured a win against George King to put the Cardinals on the board. The two faced off on court six, where Arenas took him down, 6-4, 6-2.
Diego Romo another point for Catholic with a win on court four against Guilherme Cunha Moraes. Romo defeated Moraes in set one, 6-3. Moraes put up a fight in the second set, forcing a tie break and taking the win, 7-6 (7-4). Romo solidified the victory in the third with a 6-4 win over Moraes to give the Cardinals their second point.
Neri and Goucher's Gabe Naftoly re-matched in the one spot after an intense battle earlier this season. Naftoly earned an early advantage with a 6-4 win in the first set. Neri fought back, winning set two 6-4 to force a third set. The two remained in lockstep, forcing a tiebreak, where Naftoly locked in the fourth point for Goucher, winning 7-6 (8-6).
Hollinger showcased his determination in the fifth spot, facing off against Ian Hewes. He fell in a close first set to Hewes, 7-5. Hollinger then took an early lead over Hewes in set two, ultimately winning 7-5 to force a third set. The two battled in the third, Hewes leading 5-4 before ending the match due to Goucher's winning point.
The Cardinals conclude Landmark Tournament play with an overall record of 15-7.
