Box Score SCRANTON, Pa. - Sophomore Alex Garza totaled the team's lone hit as the Catholic University softball fell to top-seeded Susquehanna Sunday in the Landmark Conference Softball Championship at Scranton's Magis Field.
The Cardinals (13-17) finished their season in the conference tournament for the 11th consecutive season.
Due to weather, the tournament was moved from Susquehanna to the University of Scranton in a single-elimination format. Susquehanna went on to defeat Moravian in the championship game to capture their third title and first since 2017.
Catholic had a chance to take a lead with the game's first run in the top of the third when Garza doubled to center and advanced to third on a wild pitch. However, River Hawks starting pitcher, Gabby Bubba, retired the next two batters she faced to leave Garza stranded and keep the game scoreless.
Susquehanna (26-7) would take advantage in the bottom of the inning, scoring two unearned runs on two Cardinal errors.
The Cardinals threatened again in the fourth when freshman Amanda Gomez was hit by a pitch. Junior Sammy Phillips moved Gomez into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt, but like the previous inning, Bubba retired the next two batters and Gomez was stranded on third.
Inside the circle, junior Katie Hurd limited the River Hawks to just four hits and one walk over 6.0 innings, but two unearned runs in the third proved to be the difference.
Bubba earned the win after allowing just one hit over 5.0 scoreless innings and striking out three. Katie Murphy picked up her fifth save and second in three meetings against Catholic this season after pitching a scoreless sixth and seventh while striking out four.
