Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic University men's lacrosse junior Nic Pezone made 23 saves as the Cardinals held off a late charge by Elizabethtown en route to a 14-13 victory Saturday at Carlini Field.
Catholic (7-3, 3-0 LC) extended its Landmark Conference win streak to nine games while improving its record to 10-1 at home the last two seasons.
Pezone's 23 saves were one shy of his career set against Stevens in the first round of the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship on May 15, 2021. He also picked up two ground balls and scored his first career goal with 2:57 left in the first quarter to give the team a 2-1 lead.
The game featured seven ties and six lead changes with the last coming late in the fourth quarter when the Cardinals scored four-straight to take the largest lead of the game for either team, 14-11 with 3:02 remaining.
Following back-to-back goals by senior Joey Rockovich, Elizabethtown (6-6, 2-1 LC) scored two of their own just 46 seconds apart to pull within one with 1:12 to play.
After losing the ensuing faceoff, the Blue Jays caused a turnover, giving them a shot to tie the game with under a minute left. However, Danny Gilbert's shot went wide and senior Tynan Hillery made a diving stop towards the end line to secure possession for Catholic.
The Cardinals were unable to run out the clock as Elizabethtown forced another turnover and took two shots in the final 10 seconds, both of which were stopped by Pezone to preserve the victory.
Pezone totaled 13 of his saves in the second half, including eight in the third quarter. He also faced a season-high 56 shots.
Offensive, senior Sean Baudo totaled five goals and six points, both season highs. With three goals, Rockovich also netted a hat-trick, the fourth of his career and first since April 18, 2019.
Junior Ryan Carroll dished out a career-high for assists, finding Rockovich for what proved to be the game-winning goal with just over three minutes left.
Senior Mike McShea won 21-of-29 faceoffs, his second game this season and sixth of his career with at least 20 wins. He also picked up 10 ground balls.
McShea has won 620-of-1007 faceoffs in his career for a .616 winning percentage while totaling 399 ground balls.
Catholic returns to action next Saturday, April 16 when the Cardinals host Drew on Senior Day beginning at 1 p.m.
