Box Score 2 WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic University baseball graduate student Billy Duke and senior Matt Tesoriero led the Cardinals to a sweep of a Landmark Conference doubleheader against Juniata Sunday at Talbot Field.
With a pair of one-run victories, Catholic (19-6, 6-0 LC) extended its conference win streak 12 games and its home winning streak to eight.
Duke finished the day with three hits, including a double and home run, and five RBIs while Tesoriero had a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th in game two.
Catholic 7, Juniata 6
The Cardinals jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a solo home run by junior Zach Burton and RBI-single by junior Ben Nardi.
However, the Eagles (6-14, 1-7 LC) scored three runs in the second and two in the third to take their only lead of the day, 5-2. Two of the runs in the second were unearned while the two in the third came on a two-run homer by Isaac Maclay.
Catholic tied the game in the fifth on a three-run homer by Duke after back-to-back singles by Nardi and senior Peter Giombetti. It was Duke's fifth home run of the season. He entered the year with just two in 109 career at-bats.
The Cardinals went back in front in the sixth on an RBI-double by freshman Donte Pozzi before Juniata tied the game for the third time with another unearned run in the top of the eighth.
Freshman Matthew Fisher scored the game-winning run on an error with two outs in the bottom of the eighth when the Eagles tried to catch Pozzi stealing second.
Duke went 1-for-4 with three RBIs while Giombetti was 2-for-3 with a walk and one RBI.
Sophomore Danny Fitzgerald improved to 4-0 on the season after retiring Juniata in order in the ninth. He surrendered just two hits and struck out two over 2.0 innings of work while allowing just one unearned run.
Catholic 5, Juniata 4 (10 innings)
Just like game one, the Cardinals won the game after the Eagles tied it late. Trailing 4-2 in the top of the ninth, Juniata tied the game on a two-run double to left center by Joey Allegrini.
Looking to win it with bases loaded and only one out in the bottom of the ninth, Catholic stranded all three runners after Dominic Hoyle recorded the last two outs himself with a strikeout and ground out.
The Eagles threatened in the 10th on a two-out double by Corey Daniels, but junior Brendan Martin struck out the next batter to give the Cardinals another chance to win in the bottom of the inning.
This time, Catholic responded. After a leadoff single by Burton, the team put runners on the corners with just one when Tesoriero single to center for his only hit of the day, scoring graduate student Tighe Watson to send the Cardinals to their 17th win in the last 19 games.
Prior to the 10th, Catholic scored all four of its runs in the fourth on two-run singles by Duke and Fisher.
Duke went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs while Burton was 2-for-4. Pozzi was hitless in two at-bats, but did draw three walks.
After picking up his first save of the season Saturday, Martin got his third win in relief on Sunday, pitching a scoreless 10th while striking out two.
Despite scattering just four hits with no earned runs and striking out seven, senior Jack Zaffiro was denied his first win in six starts this season after Juniata tied the game in the ninth.
Meanwhile, senior Skylar McLean did not allow a hit in his two innings of work, retiring all six batters he faced on just 12 pitches in the seventh and eighth.
The Cardinals return to action on Tuesday with a non-conference contest at crosstown rival Gallaudet. First pitch from Hoy Field is at 6 p.m.
