TOWSON, Md. - The Catholic University men's tennis team dropped a Landmark Conference contest to Goucher, 8-1, on Wednesday afternoon.
The Cardinals (3-5, 1-3 LC) were led by junior Juan Gomez who claimed Catholic's sole victory of the day at No. 2 singles. Gomez defeated Omosesan Adebamgbe in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
Adebamgbe got the better of Gomez on the doubles court as Goucher (7-6, 4-0 LC) took all three doubles matches. He combined with Brian Kane to defeat Catholic's duo of sophomore Allan Van Nostrand/Gomez at the top doubles spot, 8-5.
Van Nostrand fell to Kane in a tightly contested match at No. 1 singles. After dropping the first set, the sophomore battled back to take the second by a break, but ultimately fell in a third-set tiebreak (2-6, 6-4, 5-10).
Freshman Ben Perks and junior Matt Rudolf fell at No. 2 doubles (2-8) while the senior pair of David Brennan and James Schmalz also faltered at No. 3 doubles (4-8).
Rudolf faced off with Goucher's Angel Cerpa at No. 3 singles, and after a tight first set, ultimately succumbed in straight sets (4-6, 0-6). Brennan also had a tough day on the singles court, losing at No. 5 singles without winning a game.
Senior Emmett Lee played at No. 4 singles (2-6, 2-6) and sophomore Diego Robles-Rivero featured at No. 6 singles (0-6, 1-6).
The Cardinals look to get back to winning ways this Saturday, April 23, when they travel to Scranton to face the Royals in a Landmark Conference matchup. Opening service is set for 1 p.m.
