Cardinals Drop Doubleheader at No. 2 Salisbury

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SALISBURY, Md. - The Catholic University softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to No. 2 Salisbury on Wednesday afternoon.

The Cardinals (10-10) were led by sophomore Sophia Fike and freshman Amanda Gomez combined to go 6-for-13 with two doubles, one RBI and one run.

Salisbury 7, Catholic 1

Catholic threatened in the first as Fike led off with a single, but after Gomez advanced the runner with a successful sacrifice bunt, she was stranded on base after back-to-back ground outs.

Natalie Paoli got the scoring started for Salisbury in the bottom of the first, when she doubled to left center field to drive in the first run of the game.

In the third, Paoli left her impact again, hitting a two-run homer to left center. Carrie Jacoby followed with her own two-run blast to extend the Sea Gull lead to 5-0.

Catholic got its sole run of the game in the top of the sixth, when Fike and Gomez combined for more offensive productivity. Fike led off the inning with a double and Gomez immediately followed with a double of her own to push the run across. Junior Katie Hurd then reached on an error, but a hard line drive by sophomore Kaitlyn Murphy turned into a double play and ended Catholic's momentum. The next Cardinal batter also lined out to end the inning.

The Sea Gulls (30-2) added two more in the bottom of the sixth before Catholic went down in order to end the game in the seventh.

Hurd pitched a complete game for the Cardinals, her ninth in 11 starts. She received the loss, dropping her to 6-5 on the season. Sea Gull starter Lindsey Windsor also pitched a complete game en route to a win, pushing her to 12-0 on the year.

Salisbury 6, Catholic 1

It was more of the same from game one as Catholic fell victim to a lack of offense, again only platting one run.

Salisbury opened the scoring in the bottom of the second, when Francesca Cuttitta executed a successful suicide squeeze. She dropped a bunt toward sophomore pitcher Justina Benvenuto, allowing the runner from third to score and all other runners to be safe on the play.

The Sea Gulls doubled their lead in the third, when Windsor hit a solo home run to left field. They then added two more in the fourth when a fielding error allowed two unearned runs to cross the plate.

Catholic again attempted to rally in the sixth, as back-to-back doubles from graduate students Allie Lajeunesse and Makayla Czan plated the sole run of the game for the Cardinals, making it 4-1. They were able to get two more runners on base through a walk and a hit batter but were unable to push across any more runs.

The Sea Gulls scored two more via an Abby Mace two-run homer in the sixth.

Benvenuto got the loss, dropping her to 4-5 on the year. Sea Gull starter Nicole Ortega pitched 5.1 innings to get the victory before Savannah Sheats came in to earn a five-out save.

The Cardinals look to bounce back on Saturday when they travel to Elizabethtown for a Landmark Conference doubleheader. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
