WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Catholic University women's tennis team dropped a tight match to Landmark Conference opponent Elizabethtown on Sunday, 5-4.
The Cardinals (6-8, 1-2 LC) were led by sophomore Marissa Stambaugh, who picked up two victories in dramatic fashion.
Playing at No. 2 doubles with partner Liv Sensenbrenner, the duo triumphed in a tiebreak over Blue Jay challengers Olivia Richards/Maddy Binder, 8-7(7). Individually, Stambaugh won at No. 4 singles via two tiebreaks. (7-6(4), 7-6(3)).
Senior Brooke Simonson also picked up two victories for the team and personal improved to 8-0 at No. 1 singles during the spring season. She defeated Blue Jay Kailey Caroland in straight sets at the No. 1 position (6-4, 6-0) and combined with junior Abbey Cassidy to win at No. 1 doubles (8-4).
Cassidy fell at No. 2 singles (4-6, 2-6) while Sensenbrenner dropped the match at No. 3 singles (2-6, 0-6).
Junior Aubree Narus and Senior Josie Cost fell just short at No. 3 doubles, 5-8. Narus (No. 5) and Cost (No. 6) also dropped their singles matches by the same score (2-6, 3-6).
The Cardinals look to bounce back as they go on the road for their final four matches of the season. They will face Goucher this Wednesday, April 13. Opening service is set for 4 p.m.
