WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Catholic University men's tennis team swept Landmark Conference rival Elizabethtown, 9-0, on Sunday to claim its first conference victory of the season.
The Cardinals (3-4, 1-2 LC) only lost three total games on the doubles courts and only one player dropped a set in the singles matches.
Sophomore Allan Van Nostrand led the Cardinals at No. 1 singles (6-1, 6-1) and picked up a sweep with partner junior Juan Gomez Vitta at No. 2 doubles (8-0). Gomez Vitta cruised to victory in his singles match at the No. 2 position (6-2, 6-1).
Junior Matt Rudolf and freshman Benjamin Perks combined to defeat the Blue Jay pair of John Ritter/John Hanson at No. 1 doubles, 8-2. Rudolf only dropped one game when he squared off with Hanson on the singles court (6-1, 6-0).
The senior duo of James Schmalz and David Brennan won at No. 3 doubles (8-1) while Brennan also triumphed at No. 5 singles.
Senior Emmett Lee also won in straight sets at No. 4 singles (6-2, 6-2) while sophomore Lucas Boyle completed Catholic's perfect day by battling back to win a three-set match at No. 6 singles (1-6, 7-5, 10-5).
The Cardinals look to string wins together as they go on the road for their final four matches of the season. They will have a nine-day layoff before they travel to Goucher on Wednesday, April 20. Opening service is set for 3:30 p.m.
