HILTON HEAD, S.C. - Seniors Brooke Simonson and Liv Sensenbrenner led the Catholic University women's tennis team to its first win of the spring season on Sunday afternoon, 6-3, over Albion at the Hilton Head Beach and Tennis Resort.
Catholic (4-4) dominated the singles matches, winning five out of six. Simonson was dominant at No. 1 singles, securing a straight-set victory over Albion's Saige Jost, 6-2, 6-1, while Sensenbrenner used an emphatic first set to grab the win at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-4.
Simonson and Sensenbrenner also combined for an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles.
Sophomore Marissa Stambaugh faced a tiebreak in the first set, but ultimately came through with a 7-5, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles.
Clutch performances by two less experienced Cardinals were just as vital in securing the team victory. Freshman Paige Brightwell grabbed a gigantic win in a third-set tiebreak at No. 4 singles. After taking the first set 6-4, she dropped the second, 6-2, forcing the match to go the distance. During the tiebreaker, she edged out a 10-8 victory in the decisive set.
Junior Aubree Narus also came through in three sets to win at No. 6 singles. She won the first set, 6-3, before losing the second by the same score. She then earned a 12-10 victory in a marathon third-set tiebreak to claim her first career win.
The Cardinals look to build momentum when they hit the court again tomorrow against Gordon. First serve is scheduled for 12 p.m. at the Hilton Head Beach and Tennis Resort.
