FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Catholic women's tennis traveled to Virginia this weekend for the ITA Regional Championships hosted by Mary Washington. The Cardinals competed against fellow NCAA Division III athletes in both singles and doubles matches.

On Friday, September 25, freshman Carmen Valentino faced off against Ellie Smith of Gettysburg. Valentino had a strong performance over Smith, defeating her 6-1, 6-0.

In doubles, Ella Knox and Meaghan Laniewski battled against Julieta Alvarez Salsamendi and Gabriella Coutts of Washington College, winning 8-7(7-5). Following their victory, Knox and Laniewski then faced off against Sophia Dadley and Scarlett Gamez from Christopher Newport. The Cardinals fell to the Captains in the doubles match, 8-5.

For their first match of the day, freshman pair of Cristina Moreira and Elaina Nesbitt faced off against Lyla Duff and Madison Cockrell of Roanoke College, winning 8-4. The two then battled against Ruth Sun and Aubrey Zhou of Johns Hopkins, falling 8-0.

Later in the day, Cardinals began participating in singles matches. Annie Nemoy took on Aubrey Zhou of Johns Hopkins, who faced off against her Catholic teammates earlier in the day. Nemoy put up a valiant effort, but Zhou pulled out the victory, 6-1, 6-3.

Moreira matched up against Lynchburg's Isabella Ascensio Jaramillo later in the afternoon, securing a dominant victory. She won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3 over Jaramillo. She will face off against Franklin and Marshall's Emilia Husieva on Sunday, September 27. The match is set for 12:15 p.m.

Later in the fall 2026 season, Catholic will host Gettysburg on Saturday, October 17th. The match is set for 1 p.m. at the Dowd Family Tennis Courts.
