Box Score LEESBURG, Fla. - Catholic University softball freshman Amanda Gomez and senior Allie Lajeunesse combined for five RBIs as the Cardinals posted a 12-3 victory over Alvernia Sunday at The Spring Games.
Catholic (1-1) scored six runs in the bottom of the first and six in the bottom of the second to cruise to its first win of the season.
Gomez was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs while Lajeunesse was 1-for-3 with a two-run single. A total of seven Cardinals had at least one hit, including junior Sammy Phillips who was 2-for-2 with a double and junior Sarah Spaeth who went 2-for-3 with a double and one RBI.
After allowing one run in the top of the first, Catholic scored all the runs it would need in the bottom of the first. Leading 3-0 with two outs, senior Bella Ronca hit a single to center that was over run by the centerfielder and led to two Cardinal runs to give them a 5-0 lead. Sophomore Caroline Adams then singled to right to score Ronca as the Cardinals led 6-0 after one.
Gomez hit a three-run double to highlight a six-run second while Catholic took advantage of three walks issued by the Golden Wolves.
Alvernia (0-1) scored two runs in the top of the third on an two-run single by Allison Kirschner to cap the scoring.
Senior Katie Hurd picked up the 11th win of her career inside the circle, scattering six hits over 3.0 innings while allowing just one earned run and striking out three. Sophomore Justina Benvenuto pitched a scoreless fourth and fifth, striking out five of the eight batters she faced.
The Cardinals return to action with two games on Monday, taking on Coast Guard at 3 p.m. followed by Misericordia at 5:15 p.m.
