Box Score BALTIMORE, Md. - Catholic University baseball junior Zach Burton totaled three hits and three runs as the Cardinals posted a 13-4 road victory over Johns Hopkins Wednesday night at Babb Field.
Catholic (16-6) snapped a five-game losing streak to the Blue Jays, posting its first road win in the series since March 11, 2013. Hopkins, who began the season ranked at No. 4, is currently receiving votes in the D3baseball.com Top 25 poll.
After starting the season with just two wins in its first six games, the Cardinals posted a record of 14-2 in the month of March. They are off to their best start to a season since they started 17-5 in 2018 en route to a 31-15 record, fifth Landmark Conference championship and appearance in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional.
Burton was 3-for-4 with a walk and one RBI. He was one of nine players who had at least one hit, one of seven who scored at least one run and one of seven who had at least one RBI.
Senior Matt Tesoriero went 2-for-5 with a walk, double and three RBIs while junior Ben Nardi had two hits, double and two RBIs.
Both teams plated a run in the second before Catholic scored the next eight, highlighted by a solo home run by freshman Matthew Fisher in the fourth and a three-run double by Tesoriero in the eighth. The team also took advantage of a Hopkins error in the fifth that led to two unearned runs.
Trailing 9-1 in the bottom of the eighth, the Blue Jays (10-9) cut into their deficit with a three-run homer by Shawn Steuer. However, the Cardinals added four more runs in the top of the ninth, including one on a balk that scored senior Tommy Antonucci and two on a double down the right field line by Nardi.
On the mound, freshman Cody Bosak picked up his first career win after allowing just one hit over 2.0 innings in relief of senior Jack Zaffiro who made his fifth start of the season.
Catholic used six different pitchers in the contest, including Tesoriero who became the 24th different player to make an appearance for the Cardinals this season after retiring three of the four batters he faced in the ninth.
Jack Taranti, who was one of eight different pitchers used by Johns Hopkins, suffered the loss after surrendering the go ahead run in the fourth on Fisher's second home run of the season.
Catholic returns home for a three-game Landmark Conference series against Juniata beginning with a single, nine-inning contest on Saturday, April 2. First pitch is at noon.
NOTE: Following the game, former standout and current New York Yankees General Manager, Brian Cashman '89, will be inducted into the Catholic Athletics Hall of Fame. ESPN baseball analyst Tim Kurkjian, whose brothers Andrew '75 and Matthew '78 also played for the Cardinals, will serve as emcee. Andrew was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1999 and Matthew was a member of the 1977 team that was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2000.
