Box Score 2 WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic University softball graduate student Makayla Czan had a hit in both games, but York (Pa.) scored 15 runs on 21 hits in sweeping a non-conference doubleheader Sunday.
The Cardinals (8-6) and Spartans renewed their series for the first time since March 6, 2009 while meeting in Brookland for the first time since April 15, 2004.
Czan totaled two hits on the day as she and sophomore Sophia Fike, who went 2-for-3 in game two, combined for four of Catholic's 10 hits.
York 10, Catholic 1
The Spartans (8-3) jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the opener, highlighted by a five-run fourth in which they drove in four runs over three consecutive at-bats.
Elle Meyer started things off with a two-run triple before she scored on an RBI-triple by Natalie Decena. Alyssa Harhigh then drove in Decena with a sacrifice fly to center. York's final run came on a bases loaded walk by pitcher Hannah Vogt that scored Daphne Adams.
The Cardinals scored their lone run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI-ground out by junior Katie Hurd to bring home Fike.
Adams hit a three-run homer just inside the left field foul pole in the top of the fifth before Vogt retired three of the five batters she faced in the bottom half to invoke the run rule and give the Spartans their first road win of the season.
Vogt allowed just one unearned run on three hits to earn her third win of the season.
Czan and freshman Amanda Gomez each went 1-for-3 while sophomore Caroline Adams was 1-for-2.
York 5, Catholic 2
Just like the opener, the Spartans took an early lead with one run in the top of the first. However, the Cardinals answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning on an RBI-double by junior Sammy Phillips and an RBI-single from graduate student Allie Lajeunesse.
York tied the game on an RBI-single by pitcher Taylor Lindsay in the top of the third.
After a scoreless fourth and fifth, the Spartans took control with three runs in the sixth on doubles by Harhigh and Emma Wade, the last of which scored Adams and Harhigh.
Holding a three-run lead, Lindsay retired six of the final seven batters she faced to secure her fifth win in five starts this season. She scattered seven hits over 7.0 innings, walking just one and striking out six.
Fike went 2-for-3 for Catholic while five other Cardinals combined for five hits. Czan extended her hitting streak to five games with a single to left in the fifth.
Sophomore Justina Benvenuto struck out six, but took the loss inside the circle, allowing 10 hits and four runs over 5.1 innings.
Catholic returns to action next Saturday, April 2 in a Landmark Conference doubleheader at Juniata. The Cardinals have won 17-straight against the Eagles dating back to April 7, 2013, including seven in-a-row at West End Field. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
