Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. - A three-run homer by graduate student Billy Duke keyed a four-run sixth as the Catholic University baseball team posted a 10-6 victory over local rival Marymount (Va.) Friday at Talbot Field.
The Cardinals (14-5) extended their win streak to 10, their longest since April 19, 2019 when they won 12-straight. It was also the team's second win in the last three meetings against the Saints who were receiving 14 votes in the latest D3baseball.com Top 25.
Duke was 2-for-4 with a walk, three RBIs and two runs scored. He was one of nine players who had at least one hit for Catholic, including senior Matt Tesoriero and junior Derek Zelesnick who also went 2-for-4.
The Cardinals jumped out to a 5-0 lead through four, highlighted by an RBI-triple by Tesoriero in the third and solo home run by senior Peter Giombetti in the fourth.
Giombetti blasted his ninth home run of the season to extend his hitting streak to seven games. He is one of six players with a current hitting streak of six games or more, including sophomore Jesse Lacefield who is tied with Giombetti at seven. Lacefield was 1-for-2 with an RBI-single in the third before leaving the game after stealing second.
With nine home runs, Giombetti tied junior Ben Nardi, who hit nine in 2021, for second-most in program history. Brennan Cotter holds the record at 11 which he set in 2018.
Nardi was 1-for-4 today with a single in the sixth and currently leads the team with a 13-game on-base streak.
Trailing 5-0, Marymount (15-3) got on the board with two runs in the top of the fifth before the Cardinals got one back in the bottom half on a throwing error to lead 6-2.
Junior Brendan Martin retired the Saints in order in the top of the sixth and Catholic extended its lead to eight on Duke's three-run homer and a sacrifice fly by Zelesnick that scored Tesoriero.
Marymount added a run in the seventh on a wild pitch before Ryan Lee hit a three-run homer to left center in the ninth to provide the final margin.
Martin improved his record to 2-0 this season after scattering three hits and allowing just one unearned run over 2.2 innings in relief of senior starter Jack Zaffiro. Zaffiro went 4.1 innings, allowing just two runs on three hits while striking out four.
Catholic heads to Annville, Pa. on Saturday for a non-conference doubleheader at Lebanon Valley. The Dutchmen are currently 10-6 this season, including 4-1 at home with two wins over Landmark Conference opponents. They beat Susquehanna, 3-2, on March 19 and Elizabethtown, 8-0, on March 23.
First pitch is at noon from McGill Field.
