Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic University men's lacrosse senior Cameron Dunn scored five goals to lead four players with hat-tricks as the Cardinals posted a convincing 24-13 victory over Illinois Wesleyan Wednesday at Carlini Field.
Catholic (4-2) improved to 3-1 at home this season and 8-1 in two years under head coach Jon Sax.
Dunn scored a career-high five goals, including two in the fourth quarter as the Cardinals outscored the Titans, 10-2. Holding a slim 14-11 lead, Catholic tallied the first nine goals in the final quarter to put the game out of reach.
Dunn was one of four players who had two points in the decisive fourth quarter, including junior Ryan Carroll who picked up his first two points this season with a goal and an assist. Senior Sean Baudo had two of his three goals in the quarter while senior Chris Novella added one goal and one assist.
Illinois Wesleyan (3-3) scored the game's first three goals before the Cardinals responded with six unanswered goals in a span of 6:26 to take a lead they would never relinquish. During the run, Dunn and senior Mike McShea scored back-to-back goals just eight seconds apart to give Catholic a 4-3 advantage.
The Titans cut their deficit to one before graduate student Kevin Crowley scored the first of his four goals to give the Cardinals a 7-5 lead after one.
Six different players scored in the second quarter for Catholic who led 13-8 at halftime.
The Cardinals had 11 different players score at least one goal and 12 register at least one point. Dunn, Crowley, Baudo and senior Archer Rymiszewski each netted hat-tricks while McShea, Carroll and freshman Victor Rosado all scored their first goal of the season.
Junior Jimmy Bevevino also picked up his first point of the season with a fourth-quarter assist to Baudo on the team's 20th goal.
Catholic totaled a season-high 68 shots, its most since it had 73 in a 21-10 victory over Beloit on March 8, 2016. The Cardinals also scored 20 or more goals for the second time this season and fifth in 15 games under Sax.
McShea won 19-of-30 faceoffs and picked up 11 ground balls while senior Tynan Hillery led the team with two caused turnovers.
Junior Nic Pezone made eight saves and had one caused turnover before giving way to junior Colin McDonnell who stopped two shots.
Catholic will face Hampden-Sydney on Saturday as part of the Capitol Classic Lacrosse Tournament at Audi Field. Opening faceoff is set for noon.
