Box Score 2 LEESBURG, Fla. - A two-out, RBI-double by freshman Amanda Gomez in the bottom of the sixth led the Catholic University softball team to a 3-2 victory over Ohio Northern Friday at The Spring Games.
While the Cardinals (5-3) edged out a one-run in game one, they fell by the same margin in game two against Division II D'Youville, 7-6. Five of Catholic's eight games this season have been decided by just one run with the team posting a 2-3 record.
Graduate student Makayla Czan and sophomore Sophia Fike each went 3-for-7 on the day with one RBI and two runs scored.
Catholic 3, Ohio Northern 2
After the Polar Bears (2-4) tied the game with two unearned runs in the top of the sixth, Catholic had a runner on first with two outs when Gomez doubled to score sophomore Caroline Adams from first to put the Cardinals back in front.
With one out and the go ahead run at the plate the top of the seventh, junior Katie Hurd induced two ground ball outs to secure her third win in five starts this season.
Hurd scattered five hits over 7.0 innings and struck out five while overcoming four walks to post her fourth complete game.
Czan totaled two of Catholic's six hits, going 2-for-4 while Gomez was 1-for-3 with one RBI and one run. Graduate student Allie Lajeunesse also went 1-for-3 with one RBI.
D'Youville 7, Catholic 6
The Cardinals plated four runs over the first two innings, including three in the first, and led 6-3 in the fifth.
Junior Sarah Spaeth got things started with a two-out, two-run single in the top of the first before sophomore Alex Garza drove in Lajeunesse with an RBI-single to right.
The Saints (4-0) got a run back in the bottom of the first before Fike drove in Czan on a single to right in the top of the second to push the advantage back to three.
Catholic led 6-3 before D'Youville plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth, tying the game on a 2-run homer by Mikaela Milleville.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Saints took the lead for the first time, scoring the game-winning run when Lauren Booth hit a one-out single to score Maddy Pepke.
D'Youville then sealed the win on a ground out in the seventh with the tying run in scoring position.
Seven different Cardinals had at least one hit, led by Fike who was 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs. Czan went 1-for-3 with a walk, one RBI and two runs.
Sophomore Justina Benvenuto suffered her first loss in four starts this season, falling to 2-1, surrendering six runs on six hits over 4.1 innings.
Catholic wraps up its schedule at The Spring Games with two games on Saturday against Alfred and Millikin beginning at 10:30 a.m.
