Box Score TOWSON, Md. - Sophomore Jake Timby scored a career-high 23 points as Catholic University men's basketball secured an emphatic road win over Goucher, 80-47, at Decker Sports and Recreation Center on Wednesday night.
The victory takes the Cardinals (14-6, 7-4 LC) into sole possession of third place in the Landmark Conference, after Scranton (12-9, 6-5 LC) fell to Drew (14-8, 8-3 LC) in overtime also on Wednesday night. The top four teams at the conclusion of the regular season will qualify for the Landmark Conference tournament.
Timby caught fire early, scoring 18 of his 23 points in the first half. The sophomore guard shot 6-of-9 from beyond the three point line, the six makes matching his season-high. This was his second 20-point game of the season.
Sophomore Jesse Hafemeister added 13 points, making this the 17th straight game that he has scored in double digits. Sophomore Colby Martins also scored in double figures, contributing 11 points. This is his ninth game of the season scoring in double figures, and his fourth in a row.
Despite the big night from Timby, the Cardinals relied on balanced scoring, as 13 different players registered at least one point in the game. Senior Sam Golden scored a season-high eight off of the bench.
After leading 46-30 at halftime, the Cardinals' defense ramped up in the second half to only allow Goucher 17 second-half points. As a team, Catholic grabbed seven steals and blocked three shots, while holding the Gophers to only 34 percent from the field.
This is the second time this season that Catholic has scored 46 points in a half, the only other being when the Cardinals welcomed Goucher to Franny Murray Court with an 84-40 on Jan. 26.
Freshman Justin Green contributed seven rebounds, three assists, one block and one steal while senior David Angelo grabbed seven rebounds and dished two assists. As a team, the Cardinals committed a season-low seven turnovers.
Prior to tip-off, the team was among nine teams ranked in the NCAA REGION V rankings, along with two others from the Landmark (Susquehanna, Drew).
Catholic is back in action Saturday, Feb. 12 when they return to Franny Murray Court to face Moravian on Senior Day. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. preceeded by Senior Day activities.
