Box Score MADISON, N.J. - Catholic University men's basketball sophomore Jesse Hafemeister had 17 points to lead four players in double figures as the Cardinals posted a 73-71 victory over Drew Saturday at Baldwin Gymnasium.
Catholic (13-5, 6-3 LC) snapped an eight-game losing streak against the defending Landmark Conference champions, including a four-game skid on the road. The Cardinals posted their first win in the series and first at Baldwin Gymnasium since Feb. 4, 2017.
Hafemeister had a game-high 17 points after scoring 19 in the first meeting between the two teams back on Jan. 15.
Catholic had four players score in double figures for the seventh time this season. The team improved its record to 5-2 in those games.
Sophomores Tommy Kelly and Colby Martins each added 15 points while freshman Justin Green totaled his first career double double with a career-high 13 points and 11 rebounds. Green had a career-high 14 rebounds at Bridgewater (Va.) on Dec. 11.
The game featured six ties and 16 lead changes with the Cardinals overcoming an eight-point deficit with 6:21 remaining in the first half. Led by five points from Martins and three from Green, Catholic used a 9-0 run to take a 32-31 lead before trailing by one at the half, 35-34.
Hafemeister had nine first-half points while Martins had eight and Green totaled six points and eight rebounds. The Cardinals had just two turnovers in the first 20 minutes.
With the game tied for the sixth time at 56-56, Catholic took its largest lead of the game at seven points with 4:40 to play on the strength of a 9-2 run.
The Rangers (13-8, 7-3 LC) would cut the deficit to two with 40 seconds remaining, but a steal by Hafemeister with one second remaining sealed the Cardinals' seventh win in nine road games this season.
With the win, Catholic moved to within half-a-game behind Drew for second place in the Landmark Conference standings. The Cardinals are currently tied for third with rival Scranton.
Howard McBurnie, Jr. led the Rangers with 15 points and 17 rebounds. He had five offensive rebounds helped lead to 19 second-chance points for the home team as it outrebounded Catholic, 41-31.
The Cardinals finished with a season-low seven turnovers. They are 6-0 in games when they commit 10 turnovers or less.
Catholic returns to action on Sunday when it heads to Elizabethtown for a rescheduled game with the Blue Jays. Tip-off is at 2 p.m. from Thompson Gymnasium.
