Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic University men's lacrosse team secured their third victory of the season on Saturday over No. 19 Colorado College, 19-14.
The Cardinals (3-1), who are receiving votes in the USILA poll, were led by seven goals from graduate student Kevin Crowley. He also added two assists and a career-high six ground balls. His nine points also matched his career high.
Catholic got off to a strong start, taking a 6-2 lead after the first quarter. Crowley and senior Sean Baudo scored the first two goals before the Tigers (0-4) sored their first of the afternoon with 7:25 remaining in the quarter. The Cardinals scored the next three goals in less than two minutes, including an extra-man opportunity by senior Nick Fanelli, to push the lead back to three.
Catholic and Colorado College traded goals in the second quarter, as senior Joey Rockovich picked up his second of a season-high four assists. Rockovich assisted Crowley with just two seconds remaining in the half to give the Cardinals a 10-5 lead at the halftime break.
The Cardinals scored a tic-tac-toe transition goal in the first eight seconds of the second half following one of 17 face-off wins by senior Mike McShea. Every attacker touched the ball before Rockovich found Baudo across the crease.
Catholic scored one more to push its lead to seven, but the Tigers responded with five straight goals over the remaining eight minutes of the quarter to cut the lead to just two.
Junior Nic Pezone had an outstanding fourth quarter, making seven of his 11 total saves and only allowing four goals. One save led to a fast-break opportunity that senior Tynan Hillery put away, marking his first goal of the season. The defender led the Cardinals with three caused turnovers while contributing five ground balls.
Baudo scored four goals and was one of 12 Cardinals who registered a point, and McShea won 17-of-33 faceoffs while scooping up 13 groundballs.
This marks Catholic's second win over a ranked opponent this season, following a 13-6 victory over No. 20 Washington and Lee in Lexington to open the campaign.
The Cardinals will return to the field next Saturday, March 5, when they welcomes No. 4 Christopher Newport to Carlini Field. Opening faceoff is set for 1 p.m.
