Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic University women's lacrosse team picked up their first win of the season over St. Mary's (Md.) on Wednesday, 21-15.
It was an offensive showdown for the Cardinals (1-1) as eight different players scored and three different players posted hat-tricks. Junior Kate Olsen scored a career high seven goals while classmate Caroline Beckett picked up a career high five assists to lead all scorers.
Olsen and Beckett got Catholic off to a quick start as the two combined for the first three goals of the game to take a 3-0 lead less than five minutes in. Seniors Clare Richards and Anna Maupin scored the last two goals of the quarter to begin a 6-0 run for the Cardinals into the second.
Sophomore Shelby Graser scored two during the streak as the Cardinals took a 10-3 lead. However, the Seahawks (0-1) scored six of the last seven goals of the half to cut the lead to just two at halftime.
Richards scored two goals in the third quarter to secure her fourth career hat-trick to go with a team-high five draw controls. Sophomore Rachel Rubenstein also won five draw controls to go along with two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
The Cardinals went on a five-goal run to end the third quarter and start the fourth, pushing the lead back to seven with 9:09 remaining. After St. Mary's scored three straight goals in just over 90 seconds, Catholic scored three of the last four goals to secure the win. Riley Cherkes' highlighted the fourth with three points in this span.
Junior Grace Hill caused a career-high four turnovers to go along with three ground balls, two points and one draw control.
Senior Rachel Searle picked up the win behind three saves and a team-high four groundballs.
Catholic will have an 11-day break before returning to Carlini Field when it hosts Kenyon in the first-ever meeting between the two teams. Opening draw is set for 3 p.m.
