Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. — Senior Peter Giombetti's career day led the Catholic University baseball team to an 11-5 victory over Stevenson at Talbot Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Giombetti's two home runs in his first two at-bats helped to get Catholic out to an emphatic early lead. After graduate student Tighe Watson and senior Matt Tesoriero led off Catholic's bottom of the first with back-to-back walks, Giombetti took Stevenson's Brady Power long on a full count to open the scoring for the Cardinals.
In the bottom of the third, after junior Ben Nardi singled through the left side, Giombetti absolutely hammered a no-doubter over the left-field fence off of relief pitcher Mason Calafati. Giombetti then added an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth to his already-stellar day. This marks his first career multi-home run game.
Freshman Dante Pozzi registered a multi-hit game, doubling in the second and leading off the fourth with a single. Freshman Matthew Fisher blasted his first career home run to plate Pozzi and begin Catholic's five-run fourth.
Freshman Cody Bosak made his first collegiate start, pitching 4+ innings. The right-hander struck out three and walked none, and forced Stevenson into seven groundouts (of 12 total outs) during his time on the mound.
Tesoriero had an impressive day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double, a single and a walk. He drove in two and scored three runs.
The Cardinals' big bats had them out to a 10-0 lead after four. After the Mustangs got four back in the top of the fifth, Catholic's relief pitching shut down Stevenson in impressive fashion.
The quartet of sophomore Chance Legere, freshman Jake Lynes, sophomore Ryan O'Keefe and freshman Lucky Perrotto pitched a near-flawless four innings, allowing no runs on just one hit, while striking out three.
Watson showed off his range throughout the day at shortstop, making a number of solid defensive plays, highlighted by a web gem in the top of the seventh inning. With one out and nobody on, the graduate student dove to his right on the outfield grass to glove a hard-hit ground ball, sprung up quickly and fired a laser to first base to nab Stevenson's Alex Russo by half a step.
Legere gets the win in relief while Power is hit with the loss. Stevenson falls to 1-4-1 on the season while Catholic improves to 2-1.
The Cardinals are back in action on Friday, as they welcome Montclair State to Talbot Field for a three-game weekend series. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
