Box Score SCRANTON, Pa. - Led by 20 points from sophomore Tommy Kelly, the Catholic University men's basketball finished the regular season with a 70-66 victory over rival Scranton Saturday at the John Long Center.
The Cardinals (17-6, 10-4 LC) finished with at least 17 wins in the regular season for the first time since 2016-17 when they were 17-8 entering the Landmark Conference Men's Basketball Championship.
Catholic swept the season series with the Royals for the first time since 2017-18, officially eliminating them from the conference tournament for just the second time in the league's 15-year history.
Sophomore Jesse Hafemeister scored the final four points of regulation as the Cardinals rallied from a 56-52 deficit with 2:31 remaining in overtime.
Kelly scored seven of Catholic's 14 points in the extra period as he was 5-of-6 from the free throw line, including 4-of-4 in the final 29 seconds to seal the victory.
Kelly posted his fifth 20-point game this season and the sixth of his career. The Cardinals improved to 5-1 when he scores at least 20 points.
Hafemeister finished with 16 points while sophomore Jake Timby added 15.
Catholic begins its quest for a third Landmark Conference championship on Wednesday when it heads to defending champion Drew in the semifinals. The two teams split their season series with the Cardinals winning 73-71 on the road on Feb. 5. Tip-off from Baldwin Gymnasium is at 7 p.m.
