Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Catholic University men's basketball team will enter the holiday break with a perfect record after defeating Southern Virginia on Wednesday afternoon.
With the win, Catholic moved to 11-0 overall and improved upon its best start to a season since the 2011-12 campaign.
The Cardinals were led by a season-high 23 points from sophomore Sean Neylon, who went a clutch 6-for-6 from the free-throw line in the final minute of the contest to help ensure the Catholic victory.
Neylon started the game on a tear, draining four of his first five three-point attempts to accumulate 14 points in the first 14 minutes.
The Cardinals opened up a 15-point lead at halftime thanks in part to lethal shooting from beyond the three-point line. Catholic made eight of its first 11 threes and finished the half 9-of-14 from beyond the arch.
Free throws were a storyline as Southern Virginia earned its way to the line consistently throughout the game. The Knights shot 23-of-28 from the charity strip but Catholic responded by going a perfect 12-of-12 from the line.
Although he finished with 20 points, Catholic's defense did well to contain impressive Knights freshman Shaun Kenedy. Coming off of a 30-point game yesterday, the Cardinals held Kenedy scoreless for over 10 minutes to begin the game and held him to just eight in the first half.
As foul trouble hindered Jesse Hafemeister's ability to find a rhythm, Tommy Kelly and Colby Martins picked up the slack, scoring 15 and 13 points, respectively. Kelly also added four assists and seven rebounds.
Jake Timby scored seven points off the bench, highlighted by an acrobatic layup after a steal to beat the halftime buzzer. Catholic outscored Southern Virginia by 24 during Timby's 18 minutes on the court.
The Cardinals will now enjoy a 12-day break from competitive action before they return to the court on Tuesday, Jan. 3, for their final non-conference game of the season. Aaron Kelly's men will travel to Fredericksburg for a 5 p.m. tip against Mary Washington.
