Cardinals Use Third Quarter Outburst To Breeze Past Griffins

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Catholic University women's basketball team outscored Gwynedd Mercy 25-5 in the third quarter on Monday afternoon on the way to a 76-40 victory in the opener of the Jamie Lynn Roberts/Fairfield Inn Holiday Tournament.

Catholic took a 12-point lead after 20 minutes of action but really took over in the third quarter, extending the lead to 32 after 30 minutes of gameplay.

Carly Mulvaney led all scorers with 12 off the bench as 13 different Cardinals scored in the win.

The Cardinals trailed 12-10 before a Mulvaney jumper knotted the game at 12-12 with 2:57 remaining in the first quarter. At the 2:12 mark, Amelia Baldo found an open Sammie McCarter for three and Catholic retook a 15-12 lead. Mulvaney hit a three with 30 seconds left, but the Griffins answered, ending the quarter with an 18-15 Catholic lead.

Mulvaney hit her second three with 5:51 to play in the first half, pushing Catholic ahead 27-20. Back-to-back buckets from Anna Scoblick put the Cardinals up by 14 before taking a 12-point lead to the locker room.

Catholic opened the third period on a 15-0 run, taking a 51-24 lead after a Rachel Bussanich layup. Erin Thompson scored seven straight for the Cardinals during the run. At the 2:12 mark of the third, McCarter drilled a three to give Catholic a 32-point lead, its largest to that point.

Leading by 32 to start the fourth, Erin Doherty drove to the basket to push the lead to 63-29 with 9:39 remaining. Catholic outscored Gwynedd Mercy 15-11 in the fourth to close out a 36-point victory.

Catholic pulled in 52 rebounds and forced 25 turnovers in the win. Eight different players recorded a steal with Sarah White nabbing three. White chipped in with five rebounds and four assists as well.

McCarter and Molly Aromando each chipped in with nine points off the bench while Thompson finished with nine points, four rebounds, and four assists.

Catholic returns to action tomorrow afternoon as it faces off with Widener in the finale of the 2022 Jamie Lynn Roberts/Fairfield Inn Holiday Tournament.
