Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic University fell to Elizabethtown 3-0 in a Landmark Conference match on Wednesday night on Franny Murray Court. The Cardinals dip back below .500 with the loss, now sitting at 14-15 for the season.
Catholic played a competitive match, but couldn't hang on to a late second set lead before ultimately falling in three sets on Wednesday evening. After dropping the first set 25-19, the Cardinals led 23-21 in set two, but the Blue Jays rallied back to take a 24-23 lead before finally pulling out a 26-24 backbreaking set win.
Senior Brittany Connatser tallied 11 kills for the Cardinals, hitting .194 for the match. Connatser is now just 13 kills shy of totaling 600 kills in just two seasons with Catholic. Junior setter Sydney Sheppard picked up 25 assists and 13 digs in the match while sophomore libero Brynne Burgess finished with 14 digs and two service aces.
Tied 11-11 in the second set, the Cardinals used a 7-3 run to take an 18-14 lead after one of junior Olivia Blondin's six kills. A kill from freshman Erin Faughnan gave Catholic a 20-15 leads moments later, but Elizabethtown took six of seven points to tie the set at 21-21.
Back-to-back blocks from sophomore Grace Guerin pushed Catholic back ahead by two points, but once again the Blue Jays answered with three straight points. Out of a Catholic timeout, Connatser tied the set at 24-24, but Elizabethtown took the final two points to take a 2-0 lead.
Catholic tied set three at 11-11 after a Halie Murphy kill. Elizabethown jumped ahead 16-12 before the Cardinals fought back to tie the set at 16-16 with a Faughnan ace and a Connatser kill. Elizabethtown scored the next five before finishing up a 25-20 third set win.
The Cardinals will finish the regular season on Saturday in a quad match hosted by Moravian. Catholic will face the Greyhounds and Scranton.
